Mission code name: Heavy Metal. Time Remaining: 8 MINS 14 SECS

SCORE TEAM ALPHA: 1
TEAM BRAVO: 0

I have arrived at a top secret facility that houses experimental technology near the nuclear plant, I must capture their Netwar data node device. I spawn into team BRAVO behind an armoured truck. I’m armed and ready for action with my trusty custom made Metallic Red painted weapons. The Quick Tactical Jackal Assault Rifle, and my Infrared Spitfire Revolver.

A female Android from Head Quarters briefs me on the mission as I move out to capture the objective and help my team.

“HQ: Objective, eliminate all hostile agents and stop them from capturing the netwar nodes”

The whole place is covered in stone concrete walls and roads, with very large thick metal doors and panels. There are a lot of metal crates, armoured trucks and heavy duty ammunition laying around the road. Behind me I can make out two giant cooling towers which are in the restricted zone. I hear gunfire, explosions and bombs roaring through the facility. I hear industrial sounds, whirring and humming in the ambience coming from inside the facility and truck engines on standby, footsteps and heavy clothing shaking and clanking as the agents run for the objectives.

Blacklight is an FPS game published by Perfect world, produced by zombie studios, Its free to play and for a F2P game to be equal to and or better than AAA FPS games is astounding, the amount of character customisation, depth and weapon customization is incredible, there are so many detailed stats and parts to upgrade your armour, weapon tactical gear, kill streak heavy weapons from the depots and it having such a range of fun meele weapons. With over 50 weapons to choose from and more being added on as the patches get added on, it really is a game that’s had a lot of love from the developers.

Every item is free in this game, but you’ll have to level up and pay for it with the renting items system, it keeps players coming back to earn points and level up just to try out the new weapons they can buy, or if you don’t have time you can just buy it with real life money, so the game does have a nice business model going for them, but charging $8 for a permanently owned scope, is a bit much. But with the new missions system implemented and weapon of the week where players have access to a different high level weapon every week makes it so that it’s very easy to get gear and permanently rent items for free.

I just love the futuristic dystopian neo Tokyo world that Blacklight: Retribution is set in, its 50 years from now. It’s very visually stimulating, the art department at Zombie Studios did an absolutely fantastic job concepting and modelling the world of Blacklight.

There are 13 Maps available in the game at the moment, with 9 Game modes, not to mention that the players can create their own custom game modes, with 10x more HP, or Meele only games, there is so much explore and do in this game. There are really new cool game modes too like SIEGE, where you have to escort a giant scorpion tank to its destination fending off enemy agents.

Everyone is already in action and are scattered all over the secret facility in groups trying to capture the netwar device. We need 5 devices, though were behind 1 device, whoever gets 5 wins, essentially capture the flag.

HeavyMetal.pngThere are 2 possible paths. First one is to enter the facility to the right to help defend our device from enemy agents or to flank around the side of the building and try to capture their device which will also give me a nice vantage point on the enemy team. I decide to take the second path, heading up the road while sticking close to the walls, going in and out of armoured crates.

I bash the “V” key repeatedly to turn on my Hyper Reality Visor for 2 seconds which sends out quick short bursts of homing signals “VWHOOM- VWHOOM-VWHOOM” Man I really love the sound the HRV (Hyper Reality Visor) makes! It scans the facility giving me real time view of all hostiles movements which glow orange in the visor and also shows me my allies which glow blue.

The HRV (Hyper Reality Vision/Visor) is the main thing I think that brings blacklight out from most FPS games or from the typical modern military shooter. It was a breath of fresh air for me in the FPS world, as someone finally did something different and new. This HRV changes the typical FPS game dynamic so much that it just pushes it just that tiny bit more above the rest of the games.

Just once, I’d like FPS games to focus on the gameplay rather than just amping up the graphics. And Blacklight delivered that well.

You get the HRV Right away, and it provides you with so much tactical information and it’d be your fault if you got killed essentially, since you should know where your enemies are. You can’t fire your weapon while using the HRV so that stops balance issues. It stops campers from sitting in the corner the whole game since people will see them and hunt them down. It provides an even quicker faster paced action than some fps games don’t have unfortunately (*cough*Planetside 2*cough* Battlefield 3*cough) since you can never go to long without finding an enemy and vice versa.

I see an enemy agent up ahead running towards the building, I’ve got my eye locked on him. I shortly meet the unsuspecting player as I approach him from behind a huge metal door leading into the factory and aim my rifle at his head- POP-POP- HEADSHOT! –RudeboyX Eliminated. 150+CP

His headless corpse drops like a lifeless puppet while bits of his helmet visor and brain fly across and roll on the floor. I bash the “R” key to reload as soon as I had dispatched of him. I continue into the room and see an enormous towering mechanical scorpion tank in the middle of the room, halfway under construction as I and head towards the elevator which lifts me up to a onto metal bridges giving me 3 excellent vantage points I can pick.

I run across the room on the metal bridge and scan with HRV. Turning 360 degrees to see what’s behind me -VWHOOM-VWHOOM. I see the device in the next room, with 2 enemy agents, one of my allies is coming around from the other side. Behind me I see 2 allies and 4 enemy agents at our device.

“Damn… I knew I should have stayed to defend.”

“Enemy Agents have taken the device!” I hear in the distance as the enemy team grab our device, looks like they failed to defend.

I approach the device room through a corridor and peak at the end to see an enemy agents name above their head and the orange lights from their armour, He spots me and fires a barrage of bullets- I’m hit 124/200 hp left, I get back and throw my frag grenade hoping it might kill him- no luck.

I sprint out the corridor and jump from the first floor while dodging the enemy bullets and hip firing my gun -LTRBelial Eliminated- 100CP+ I’m heavily injured with 11/200 HP left, My vision and hearing are blurred and fuzzy, but I quickly grab the device- “You are now a High Threat.” And HRV scan to see the enemy flag/device carrier and his team coming around my back. And my ally coming towards me. “We’ve got the device! RUN WITH IT!” shouts his character I decide to take the alternative route around to our device, I reached a corner and suddenly, Hebisonic doubled down R50Z, CodyPilot with a shotgun.

UGHH WHY didn’t I use HRV before going around that corner,

Respawn in 5 SECS...

There has been some controversy from the FPS community though, saying that BL:R is a Pay to Win game, but no I completely disagree, nearly all the weapons have drawbacks and flaws and even if you buy the high end weapons which brings me to another point.

One of the main things about this game is that the Balance for it is incredibly well done, it’s not that only the high levels with the best gear dominate at the game, you can very easily get sniped off by a level 1 player with standard gear, since the standard gear is very good anyway.

In my opinion they just probably are too lazy to play for a long time or suck at FPS games and cry and whine about it.

I spawn inside a room in the facility this time, in what appears to be an armoury for Hardsuits Mechs. I  HRV scan while running up, I see the enemy team about to capture the flag when I throw a frag in. Hoping to kill the flag carrier.

TRIPLE KILL 500CP+ 100CP KILLED FLAG CARRIER

“Device has dropped pick it up!”

“Enemy agents have captured the device” Damn! Somehow they still captured it anyway. “TRIPLE KILL! With the flag carrier!” I type in the chat excitedly.

After some back and forth we started to catch up, I have killed about 21 people now and died 5 times.

TIME REMAINING 3:21

I run outside the facility this time to try and kill the enemy flag carrier, when I scan, I see an enemy silhouette very close to me behind me, I turn HRV off and I don’t see him. A Cloaker! I pull out my infrared revolver and aim down sight moving around to spot where he got to all the while running and jumping to avoid being aimed at. BOOM-BOOM-BOOM, I panic while frantically clicking fire on him I miss about 3 shots but I got him the sneaky bugger. -Wyzeguy Eliminated- You are now Team Warlord – Oooh I got a lot of bounty on my head now.

I suddenly hear a screeching sound above me, My character says “Heads up! Airstrike Incoming!”

Oooh no one uses these airstrikes nowadays I think to myself. I look up at the sky while running into the building, it lights up and a massive explosion detonates in the sky showering the ground with explosive shrapnel and bombs.

You may have guessed that I absolutely love the futuristic cool sound effects this game has. It’s new things that I never hear in other games and I really appreciate a new experience.

I forgot all about the enemy flag carrier which were now right behind me and were firing, I quickly try and run up an elevator and down the side staircase for some cover everything is fuzzy and-POP- I see my characters head disappear, now only showing the spinal cord connected to the rest of my corpse.

The scene freezes and pans towards the enemy who just shot me sort of like matrix bullet time.

FlipTaco killed R50Z Headshot- Heavy assault rifle.

“We’ve taken the device, cover them” yells a female ally.

2MINS 10 SECS REMANING

HQ Android announces “Mission Critical failure imminent!” Looks like we’re in a sudden death situation here.

Ughh that’s it… time for the Hardsuit I say to myself, I go to my local weapon depot which is located normally at spawn points, and grab myself a Hardsuit Calldown gun for 1300 combat points, expensive but no biggie, I have 2304 left.

I go outside to find a safe place close to the enemy flag carrier to call this baby down, I point to the floor as the gun makes a whirring sound and copies a holographic image of the Hardsuit on the ground. A holographic screen with a progress bar on my Gun reads:

HARDSUIT ARRIVAL in

3

2

1

Suddenly a very loud Airplane engine sound thunders in the sky, I look up to see a giant metal robot hurling towards the earth from the sky at a dangerous speed. BOOM! The Hardsuit lands intact, and creates a large crater on the concrete road. It looks like a huge robotic human tank, equipped with 2 large guns as its arms, a Mini-gun and a Rail-gun. It gives off a warm Hum as the engine burns on the back of its body.

“OH HELL YEAH” My Character says as I hold “E” to get in as quick as I can.

I Climb inside and pull the cockpit window down. Blue lights inside turn on and the suit Hums at me and activates, standing up straight as if it’s accepted me as its master. A new interface light shows up on the screen showing my weapon ammo and armour status.

Every step I take gives off a mechanical whirring sound and I can hear hydraulics pump the legs as I tread forward with each leg slowly. I fire up my boosters by holding “shift” and hover across the long hallway to the flag carrier and Fire my mini-gun randomly into the room for suppressive fire and to scare them too.

Someone foolishly pops out the room to which I instantly right click and fire my railgun, in an instant a blue flashing ball fires from my arm cannon into their body, 1 shot kill. Very effective.

You get the Hardsuit straight away at level 1 as your weapon depot items. People may think that the Hardsuit is overpowered since it does have 15000HP and is equipped with 2 very strong weapons. However its very easy to kill a hardsuit, each of them have weakpoints which you can find by HRV Scanning. Or you could buy a flame thrower and burn the pilot out of the hardsuit leaving it intact while you steal it, or blow it up with 2 shots from a rocket launcher, its just that new players don’t really know how to deal with it and think its over powered.

1 MIN remaining, I really need to kill the flag carrier now or else we loose, I continue into the room and fire away my minigun killing 2 more people who unfortunately popped out the corner at the wrong time. The flag carrier is all on his own now and hes hiding behind a corner, If only this hardsuit wasn’t so clunky and slow moving I could have ended this much sooner.

I see the flag carrier die as my teammate hunted him down since anyone carrying a device is visible to everyone even without HRV use and my team captures the device eventually with 00:20SECS remaining on the timer.

Words zoom onto the screen.

VICTORY – Your team has won the match

4-3

Dubstep fades in as the top 3 players are shown at the end, all doing their airplane taunts and the typical “oh no you didn’t” taunt with their finger

“Hardsuit noob”

“GG”

“gg”

“Geegeeeeeeee”

“WTF was that team… I always get paired with noobs”

“Close game damn!”

“OMG WE WON!! O.o”

The players talk amongst themselves giving the regular “GG” Good games at the end of a match while others sometimes rage just because they can’t take that they lost and I used the Hardsuit in a game. Not that it’s overpowered at all. I just know how to use it.

In conclusion I don’t generally like FPS games because they get very boring and repetitive very fast, but when I started playing Blacklight I couldn’t help but keep coming back for more and more, its so fun, fast paced and has a lovely small community around it. The HRV changes the game dynamic just that extra bit more. And who doesn’t like mowing down people with sub orbital airstrikes and Hardsuits? 9/10 Most fun I’ve ever had in an FPS game. And it’s Free too!
